Aeronautics Aerospace

Aviation continues to play a vital role in modern society. Passenger numbers in the commercial sector are expected to continue to increase in future and continuing security threats seem likely to ensure that in the defence sector the demand for military aircraft will remain.

In order to meet future needs, progress must be made to improve performance in a number of areas, including but not limited to: increasing speed and capacity; reducing weight, emissions and noise levels; and improving intelligence gathering and strike capabilities. Industry and the global research community continue to aim to address these and other challenges through a diverse range of goals, such as: the development of more-electric aircraft; the introduction of greater levels of autonomy; the incorporation of novel materials and composites into aircraft structures; and the increased usage of wireless technologies.

No matter what the future brings, high standards of safety and reliability will remain of paramount importance, both to ensure adequate levels of service and to guarantee the safe operation of aircraft and their related systems. The ESRA Technical Committee on Aeronautics and Aerospace provides a forum for industry, academia and international societies to develop, promote and discuss advancements in aeronautics and aerospace related safety and reliability technology.
